It applies to the whole year you become eligible and is claimed on Form 50-114 within one year. Benefits from other programs do not automatically qualify. Canonical: https://exemptback.com/disability-homestead-exemption-texas Reviewed: 2026-11-07 · Law checked: 2026-11-05 A disabled homeowner gets the same added school exemption and tax ceiling as an owner 65 or older. ## Who counts as disabled The Comptroller applies the Social Security Disability Insurance standard: you are unable to engage in substantial gainful activity because of a physical or mental disability. Receiving disability benefits from another program does not by itself qualify you. Your appraisal district says which documents it needs. Disabled veterans have separate exemptions based on the VA rating. See the [disabled veteran guide](https://exemptback.com/disabled-veteran-property-tax-exemption-texas). ## What you get - $60,000 more off school district taxable value (§11.13(c)). - Any local disability exemption your city, county or district adopted, at least $3,000 where offered (§11.13(d)). - A school tax ceiling (§11.26). ## If you are both 65+ and disabled You cannot receive both the disability and the over-65 exemption from the same taxing unit in the same year; you choose one. You can receive them from different taxing units (§11.13(h); Comptroller guidance). **Not sure what your record shows?** The free check reads your county record with you, applies the rules on this page, and shows any back-year refunds and yearly savings.
